The EU Directorate-General for Environment is showcasing IIIEE research in its Science for Environment Policynewsletter.

The newsletter highlights IIIEE’s study Banking on Ecosystem Services, which reveals that European banks face significant risks due to their dependencies on ecosystem services (ES). Analysing data from the ten largest European banks, IIIEE researchers estimate that at least 26 cents of every dollar of equity holding is exposed to high ES dependencies — a figure that is likely conservative.

As biodiversity loss increasingly threatens financial and economic stability, the IIIEE study urges banks to take a leading role in addressing ES dependencies to enhance their own resilience and long-term sustainability.

The Science for Environment Policy newsletter, published by the Directorate-General for Environment of the European Commission, assists policymakers stay informed about the latest environmental research essential for designing, implementing, and evaluating environmental-related policies.
