Credit allocation for thesis work

Thesis work together constitutes 150 ECTS, and as you go forward with your publication, you are to obtain partial credits for that. As of now, we go for the following as an indicative guideline.

  • Thesis with 5 articles: 5 articles (25 credits each) plus Kappa (25 credits)
  • Thesis with 4 articles: 4 articles (31 credits each) plus Kappa (26 credits)
  • Some credits are given for kappa development in the middle when putting together a licentiate/kappa for the mid-term seminar

In the early stage of your PhD study, you and your supervisors should make a plan concerning how different articles could contribute to your PhD thesis. The plan should be updated overtime reflecting the development.

The number of credits given should be tied to the PhD student’s contribution, and should not depend merely to e.g. the number of co-authors. Interim credits can be also given for articles in progress. For example, when you write a conference paper which is to be developed into an academic article, some credits could be received from the conference paper. These judgement is in principle left in the hands of your supervisors and how many credits are allocated to the respective work should be clearly recorded in the ISP, in order to maintain transparency in the system and avoid double counting.
