Departmental duties

During your PhD studies you have possibility of being engaged in departmental duties up to 20% of your work time in total. Departmental duties consist mainly of two kinds – those in relation to teaching (e.g. assist running a course in the first or second cycle education the IIIEE provides, provide components of a course such as lectures, seminars, assignments, supervision) and other (mainly) administrative tasks (e.g. representation in the IIIEE Board, assist managerial tasks related to your research, organise a conference related to your research).

While these departmental duties may be very useful in developing skills relevant for your future carrier, it tends to compete with your PhD studies and research work in terms of time and attention. Before agreeing to engage in any departmental duties, please ensure to talk with your supervisors and get their go-sign. As a rule of thumb, if you are to be engaged in teaching-related tasks more than 10% of your work time, in addition to discussing with your supervisors, you and your supervisors should talk with the IIIEE Department to get his approval. The same goes for non-teaching departmental duties – if your engagement is more than 10% of your work time, in addition to discussing with your supervisors, you and your supervisors should talk with the IIIEE Department to get his approval.

Regarding the teaching-related departmental duties, it is the Director of studies who coordinates and allocates percentage which is deemed necessary to carry out the tasks you receive. This percentage should be agreed upon both with you and your supervisor.

Regarding the non-teaching related departmental duties, you can find what the IIIEE Director indicated as of December 2019 here:

An important implication of being engaged in departmental duties is potential prolongation of your employment as a PhD student in accordance with the time these activities have taken up during your PhD studies. It is therefore crucial that your departmental duties, once agreed upon, is clearly recorded in your ISP.
