Reading courses

In addition to the courses that are established and are to be provided for multiple PhD students, you could develop some courses specific to your research need. These courses, referred to as reading courses, provide possibility for PhD students to include some research work (most commonly taking the form of literature review finalised with a paper writing) as part of your course work.

In order to enhance consistency and transparency between different supervisors and PhD students regarding what constitutes a reading course, what are the minimum components and how to allocate credits, a guidance document for a reading course has been developed (requires login with your Lucat-id):

Prior to the start of a reading course, make sure to put together a reading course syllabus (use the guideline mentioned above) and submit it to the Director of PhD study for her/his review to ensure consistency across the PhD students. The Director of PhD study then ask for approval of the course as well as the appointment of the examiner (your supervisor will be the examiner unless it is a joint reading course for a few PhD students) to the IIIEE Director. Upon receiving the approval and appointment the course can start. For further information regarding the administrative procedure, please consult the information on “administrative procedure and cost of different courses”.

Maximum number of credits that could be allocated from reading courses per PhD student is 30 ECTS.
