PhD thesis

Most likely by this time you have thought through the content quite well and discussed with your supervisors/received inputs from external discussants.

Below you find some requirements regarding the formalities.

Template

There are two templates that you need to use.

  • Template for the main text: Since 2015 we have been utilising the PhD template available at MediaTryck, the official printing house of the university. Please use that for the main body of the text.
  • Templates for the cover: the IIIEE has its own template developed in collaboration with Media Tryck, which you will find here. Make sure to use it for the cover. To pay attention to the details (e.g. thesis number, ISBN…)

Other things to be included

  • A word of thanks to a foundation supporting the PhD study: the IIIEE PhD studies have been supported by the Foundation in memory of Lars Inge Grundberg, a private foundation who kindly dedicated their money to the IIIEE in 2018, and it was decided that we utilise the money for our PhD education. Please make sure to include a line of gratitude in your thesis, as exemplified here:
“A special thanks for the financial contribution from the Foundation for the International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics and the Foundation in memory of Lars Inge Grundberg for supporting the finalization and the printing of this PhD thesis.”
  • Appended articles: Many of you who are writing article-based PhD thesis will include the articles that constitute the thesis after the “kappa”. Follow what is allowed by the different publishers of the original article and insert accordingly.
  • Clarification regarding your contribution: after the list of appended papers (which usually comes after the summary), include a page describing how you contribute to the respective appended papers.
  • List of IIIEE Dissertations: An IIIEE dissertation list that should be included at the very end of your PhD thesis (between the last appended paper and the back cover). Please make sure to insert the details of your own thesis and save for the next person who defend her/his thesis.
  • ISBN number, ISSN number, Dissertation number: you should contact the IIIEE librarian and obtain it (make sure you do in good time!), which should appear at the back cover. Regarding ISBN number, make sure to include both the one for printed version and the electronic version.

Proofreading (optional)

When deemed necessary it is possible to have a proof reader examine your thesis. If you opt for that, make sure you have sufficient time allocated for that.

Printing

We order printing of the PhD thesis at MediaTryck, the official printing house of the university. It is the responsibility of the student to contact them and make a booking for printing, so that the thesis in printed format is ready by the timing of “spikning”. Once you know the date of your defence, please contact them.

Currently the IIIEE PhD students are entitled to print 100 copies of her/his PhD thesis. Many of these have specific destinations, as found in the IIIEE PhD thesis distribution list. PhD students could print more, but in that case, the extra cost should be covered by her/himself or from the project budget.
