IIIEE PhD Education Council

According to the national regulations and the policy of Lund University, first, second and third cycle students “are entitled to representation when decisions or preparations are made that have bearing on their courses or programmes or the situation of students” (SFS 1992:1434 Chapter 2 Section 7).

The IIIEE’s PhD students are represented by the student union of the Faculty of the Engineering (LTH), with whom we as of October 2018 established a formal quality assurance agreement, and a doctoral students’ union. Due to the unique setting of the IIIEE (link to 1-1), the discussion at the LTH faculty level does not likely cover some of the issues specific to the IIIEE PhD programme.

We therefore created a IIIEE PhD Education Council in 2019 as a venue to formally discuss various issues pertaining to PhD studies. The Council has following mandates, composition and function.

Mandate

The Council is to provide a recommendation for decisions related to IIIEE PhD education, regarding the issues related to their study and learning environment. Such a recommendation is to reflect upon the discussions among the PhD students and their supervisors. The IIIEE Director (head of department), has the formal authority to make decisions related to PhD courses, PhD positions, etc (See Guild of decision making at IIIEE)

Composition

The Council consists of the following six members:

  • Director of IIIEE
  • Director of PhD studies
  • two PhD supervisor representative
  • two PhD student representatives

In addition to the six members, the PhD administrator is to participate in the meeting.

Function

The Council meeting shall take place based on necessity and any member could propose its occurrence. The Director of PhD studies is responsible for chairing the meeting. The PhD administrator is responsible for assisting the Director of PhD studies to carry out the meeting and taking minutes. The representatives of PhD supervisors and students are responsible for representing the view of the respective groups. The recommendation is made as much as possible based on consensus, while leaving the final decision to the Director of IIIEE.

The minutes from the previous meetings are found here
