The Director of PhD studies coordinates various activities related to PhD studies at the IIIEE.

During the initial meeting, (s)he will introduce you to the overall organisation of your PhD studies, issues you should think about at the initial phase of the PhD work (e.g. courses, ISP, what to discuss with the supervisors) as well as who to turn to when different issues rise during your PhD study.
