What have we learnt after four decades of research on energy efficiency?

In this new article published in the Annual Review of Environment and Resources, we collaborate with a team of researchers from around the world to critically review the contributions, advances and challenges related to research on energy efficiency.

Labelled as the ‘first fuel’ for economic development, energy efficiency has become more prominent than ever in policy and scientific communities working on climate neutral futures. However, what have we learnt from the past 40 years? What are the impacts of policy interventions? Is progress in this area fast enough to avoid global warming of 1.5C?
