Urgent political action required to reduce consumption-related emissions

A recent debate article published in the newspaper Aftonbladet calls for urgent political action to reduce consumption-related emissions.

The article published in Aftonbladet is written by fourteen Swedish researchers* in sustainable consumption. It calls for urgent political action to reduce consumption-related emissions. The main argument is that technological solutions and green industrial transitions alone are not enough to meet the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target. Almost half of the necessary emissions reductions must be achieved by reduced demand to meet the climate target. An important strategy for that is to integrate sufficiency principles - consuming based on needs rather than excess - alongside efficiency and green substitution strategies. Policymakers could assist this process by several measures ranging from changes in progressive taxation on luxury emissions, support for sharing and repair infrastructure, to initiativessupporting norm-shifting.
