Mid-term seminar on PhD research on how digital technologies can drive sustainability in business

Person presenting

On 10th October, PhD student Lisa Heldt discussed her on-going research on how companies can drive sustainability in their business models and supply chains by adopting and integrating digital technologies, such as smart sensors, blockchain, or satellite technology.

Lisa’s research investigates how companies use digital technologies in the multi-tier management of sustainability issues in complex supply chains. Andreas Feldmann, docent in Industrial Engineering and Management with specialization in resource efficient and sustainable value chains at KTH, joined as her discussant.

During the midterm seminar, Lisa presented her research so far and received valuable input and critical questions from Andreas, concluding with a lively discussion on contributions, implications and how to make the most out of the remaining year in the PhD.

Lisa’s research is particularly interested in complex commodity supply chains and the question of how companies monitor and manage impacts on environment, human rights and business across the entire upstream supply chain, beyond just first-tier suppliers. She investigates how companies use technologies and collaborations across the chain to build more visibility, traceability and transparency, as well as which challenges they encounter. Her research explores this, for instance, in the context of satellite monitoring of deforestation in agrifood supply chains (and recently, the role of the EU Deforestation Regulation, EUDR) or in the context of blockchain solutions for traceability of critical minerals like cobalt for electric vehicle batteries.
