NEW STEPS — NuclEar and Wind Socio-TEchnical Pathways for Sweden

Wind turbines

Name: NEW STEPS — NuclEar and Wind Socio-TEchnical Pathways for Sweden (Swedish: Kärn- och vindkraft sociotekniska scenarier för Sverige)

Project Leader:  Aleh Cherp (co-led with Jessica Jewell of Chalmers University)

Duration: June 2024 – December 2027

IIIEE Researchers: Aleh Cherp

Financing Body: the Swedish Energy Agency (Energimyndigheten), programme Framtidens elsystem

Aim: NEW STEPS compares and analyses technologies and policies that can realistically expand Sweden's low-carbon electricity supply while ensuring economic competitiveness. Existing techno-economic models have identified plausible combinations of low-carbon technologies that can supply the electricity required for climate neutrality. NEW STEPS complements these models by advancing science and soliciting stakeholder inputs on socio-technical and institutional drivers and barriers to nuclear and wind power. The project identifies combinations of technologies that are feasible to upscale sufficiently fast and the policies required for such a transition, as well as broader consequences for Sweden's competitiveness. In contrast to existing models, which mostly depict longer-term end-states, NEW STEPS spells out realistic storylines with near-term steps and critical intermediary junctures.
