Three of eight Swedish researchers selected for IPCC report are from IIIEE

Three IIIEE researchers have been selected to contribute to the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Seventh Assessment Report (AR7). The report should be published in 2029 and gives particular attention to the conditions that enable or constrain implementation.

Aleh Cherp, Luis Mundaca and Oksana Mont from IIIEE have been selected to contribute to the next IPCC report. Together they represent three of the four Lund University researchers, or three of the eight Swedish researchers. This is a significant recognition of the breadth and international standing of IIIEE’s research on climate change and sustainability.

Their contribution is to Working Group III, which assesses the scientific literature on climate change mitigation: the options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the policies that shape them, and the conditions that enable or constrain implementation. In comparison to earlier reports, this IPCC report is looking not only at which climate solutions exist, but at why some solutions can be implemented and scaled up while others face barriers.

  • Aleh Cherp, expert in energy transitions, is a Lead Author in Working Group III, Chapter 3: Projected futures in the context of sustainable development and climate change.
  • Luis Mundaca, expert in behavioural and environmental economics and policy analysis, will take the role as Lead Author in Working Group III, Chapter 5: Enablers and Barriers.
  • Oksana Mont, expert in sustainable consumption governance, has been appointed as a Review Editor in Working Group III, Chapter 8: Services and demand. She will contribute to the work to ensure scientific quality, coherence and balance of the assessment.

The IPCC selected 664 experts from approximately 3,700 nominees to contribute to the upcoming report. The work will continue until 2029, resulting in a synthesis report bringing together the findings from the three different working groups.

For Luis Mundaca, this is his third time serving on an IPCC assessment. He previously served as a Lead Author for the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report (AR5), published in 2014, and the IPCC Special Report on the Impacts of Global Warming of 1.5 °C above Pre-industrial Levels, published in 2018.
