The autumn semester got off to a practical start for students in the MESPOM programme together with students in the Environmental Science programme, as they visited the Sylvamo Nymölla Pulp and Paper Plant as part of their course on applied environmental management.

The study visit gave students the opportunity to step outside the classroom and explore how environmental management is approached in an industrial setting. Discussions covered the drivers, approaches and opportunities for improving environmental performance, while the students also gained insights into how paper is produced and the environmental implications of the production process.

Bringing classroom learning into an industrial facility allows students to connect theory with practice and develop a more holistic understanding of the relationship between business and environmental management. For an international group of sustainability students, it also provided an opportunity to see first-hand how environmental challenges are addressed in a real-world context.

The visit also highlighted the importance of understanding the practical realities, opportunities and challenges that companies face when working towards more sustainable production.

IIIEE is grateful to Sylvamo Nymölla Pulp and Paper Plant for hosting the students and generously sharing insights into paper production, its environmental implications and possible ways forward.

For the students, it was a valuable start to the semester, bringing applied environmental management to life beyond the classroom.
