PLATE brings together leading researchers and practitioners from different disciplines to explore cutting-edge research on how longer product lifetimes can contribute to sustainability. The 2027 conference will provide a platform for sharing research, exchanging ideas and exploring new perspectives on the role of product lifetimes in the transition to more sustainable systems.
Conference themes
The conference welcomes contributions across a broad range of themes, including:
- Design for longevity in products, buildings and systems
- Consumption, sufficiency and enduring-use practices
- Business models and value creation for longer lifetimes
- Repair, care, maintenance and stewardship
- Product lifetime measurement, modelling and assessment
- Policy, regulation and governance for longevity
- Materials, components and technical durability
- Digital longevity and software-dependent products
- Rebound effects, trade-offs and critical perspectives on longevity
- Education, tools, methods and games for longevity
- Social, cultural and ethical dimensions of product lifetimes
- Systemic transitions towards longer lifetimes, including economic systems, cross-scale perspectives and futures studies
Contributions are also welcome on product- and sector-specific research, including buildings and infrastructure; clothing, footwear and accessories; consumer electronics and electrical products; furniture and homewares; healthcare products, garments and systems; industrial products and equipment, including IT; and vehicles and mobility. Other product groups and sectors where product lifetime is relevant are also welcome. The conference particularly encourages contributions addressing emerging themes and under-studied products and sectors related to product lifetimes.
