Sustainable Industry and Business

Business has a key role to play in the transition towards sustainability. Sustainable business, or green business, with progressive environmental policies can guide society towards greener products and services as well as greener production processes and supply chains. Innovation and green business models will generate a greener economy.

IIIEE research advance knowledge and conduct independent and comprehensive analyses in how to support innovative business ideas and practices. The research addresses complex societal problems arising from activities of various industry sectors and large and small businesses through multidisciplinary and cross-cutting approaches comprising environmental management systems, company-level and national systems of innovation, sustainable entrepreneurship, product service systems and distributed economies, as well as environmentally and socially responsible product/value chain management.

Research in Sustainable Industry and Business at IIIEE relates to the Research Themes:

  • Energy and Climate Change
  • Product Systems and Waste Management
  • Sustainable Consumption and Lifestyles

The Research Themes bring together economists, engineers, political scientists, and lawyers –among others- to carry out multidisciplinary research. With a strong applied and policy focus, research at the IIIEE aims in particular to:

  • Fill critical gaps in knowledge about institutional, market and social determinants that encourage or hamper rapid progress towards a sustainable industry and business and a green economy;
  • Assess the performance of policies (e.g. efficiency, cost-effectiveness, transaction costs) taking clean technologies as a main framework for our assessments;
  • Provide recommendations to advance policies and business practices addressing a green economy.
