Seminar, 350th Anniversary

Our constant quest for development and new technology has a price. Mobile phones, tablets and computers - sooner or later our everyday electronics becomes electronic waste, e-waste. The aim of the event is to raise awareness of the environmental and social impact associated with electronics, and what we can do to reduce it. With activities involving also students from secondary school in Lund, e-waste is highlighted during this day, one of today's major challenges.

During the Science Week The digital society as part of the Lund University 350 jubilee, the IIIEE is co-organising the event "How Sustainable is the Digital Society?" together with LUCSUS and SYSAV.

During this day we will illustrate how much e-waste that we generate every day in Lund through an installation at Stortorget in Lund. In the morning, researchers from LUCSUS and the IIIEE will give short seminars at the Spyken high school about the environmental and social implications of e-waste, and what we can do to prevent and minimise this impact. In the afternoon, the Spyken high school students will take part in workshops held at the IIIEE, together with representatives from the electronic waste, recycling and refurbishment sectors. The morning and afternoon events are dedicated for high school students but will also engage a number of MSc and PhD students. The event will be documented and available on-line. The installation at Stortorget, as well as material from the workshops at the IIIEE, will be available at Vattenhallen afterwards.
