Alvar’s research relates to the diffusion of residential solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. The overarching aim is to identify and assess drivers and barriers to PV diffusion in order to inform actors with an interest in supporting PV diffusion. The research focusses on institutional aspects (including policy instruments targeting PV as well as the wider institutional setup), firms’ strategies, information dissemination, and social influence among adopters. Furthermore, it investigates how different factors relate to geographical location and scale. Theoretical frameworks include technological innovation systems (TIS), business models, and Rogers’ diffusion of innovations theory.
